Air leak? Fuel primer bulb soft

Hi everyone, I'm brand new here and I've just bought a late 2004 diesel auto Terracan. I bought it with an intermittant starting problem that I think is the crank sensor. Whilst looking under the bonnet I thought I'd give the fuel primer bulb a squeeze and it was soft. After about 25 squeezes it did get hard and I shut the bonnet. I went back about an hour later and bulb was soft and again took about 25 pumps to go hard. Is this normal?

PCV valve?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if the CRDI engines have a PCV valve arrangement.  I'm wondering if it is as indicated in the picture.  If it is do you know if the valve is at A or B on the picture.  I appear to be having oil coming down the pipe from A into the air intake then leaking out where the plastic air intake joins into the turbo inlet.  If this setup is right I would then be suspecting the PCV valve?

Oil Cooler Leak

We were headed for The Kimberley a couple of weeks ago, towing  2 tonne van, but had problems with overheating and 'engine malfunctions'.

The head winds going into Coober Pedy were very strong and we had to stop several times because the Terra was going into limp mode.

I had the error codes for fuel filter and the mass air flow sensor cleared after replacing the fuel filter and putting cleaner through the MAF and all appeared to well. However the Terra was using oil.

We pressed on to Tennant Creek and the overheating problem reappeared. We were towing at 90 km/hr in third gear and turning the air-con on and off depending on the engine temp which we monitored by Ultragauge. At about the same time I got a pinched nerve in my neck so we wimped out and returned to Adelaide.

Turns out the problem is due to the oil cooler leaking oil into the engine cooling system. The O-rings between the oil system and the engine cooling system have failed. The oil cooler is located between the oil filter and the engine block and so the cooler and four O-rings need replacing, plus the engine cooling system being flushed and its hoses replaced because of oil contamination.

If O-ring failure is a problem then it's probably a good idea to have them and the cooler replaced every 100-130 '000 kms.

High pitched engine squeal noise

Hi Guys Terracan has just started to squeal when driven and varies when revs go up and down but can't hear it at idle. Doesn't seem to have any loss of power.

I have done a search but could find nothing about this.

Any ideas

"Check Engine" light

Experts please help !!

Terracan TDI plated Dec 06 and purchased Dec 07 started showing "Check engine" light at around 75,000kms [now 100,000] when towing a 2150 kg caravan and climbing moderate hills.

I usually drive with overdrive off at around 87 to 90 kmh. However, have found the light comes on with or without overdrive. Similarly, I have had a DP chip fitted since new, and again, the light appears whether or not the chip is operational. I stop, turn off the engine and then restart. Light returns first time I reload the engine on a rise.

Have been advised by 2 separate Hyundai mechanics to ignore the light, but 4 times so far, the engine drops into "limp home mode" after running with the light on for 20 -30 kms. Not a happy feeling in the bush!

Computer fault P1119 'Manifold absolute temperature circuit high input" is recorded each time. I was recommended through the Internet to have the "inlet manifold sensor" replaced - no improvement.

Recently had the EGR system dismantled checking for restriction or blockage. Found to be very clean internally.

Sometimes fuel consumption goes haywire [have scan gauge fitted] or temperature rises to 96/98 F

Having studied this Forum closely for a possible solution, I feel left with only 2 remaining possibilities - replace injectors or fuel pump.

I am hoping someone has been down the same road.

The steering slip joint universal joints have a habit of freezing / seizing up and cause a knocking when you turn the steering wheel -

remove the slip joint and free up the unijoints with a good lubricant or soak them over night in diesel - usually frees them up - regrease the slip joint and refit the assembly

Terracan using excess fuel

Hey Guys,

Trying to chase up any info on a 2.9ltr 4cyl terracan belonging to my father in law. it's about 10 years old and recently began using excessive fuel. There is no loss of power, no smoke (other than the normal puff of black when he puts his foot down), no external leaks, air filter is clean as a whistle.

Are there any sensors or switches or other components he can check/have checked for using excess fuel?

He used to get about 300klm off about half a tank, now he's lucky to get even 200klm off the same amount.

Any help would be appreciated.

car just stalls

:(the engine just stalls on first journey in morning, have to prime filter about 20-30 pumps,i have to do this  about 2 or 3 times,then the car runs perfectly for the rest of the day, just replaced with a delphi hdf924 fuel filter, just wondering if anyone has had similar  problem. Hopefully  someone might have a solution. Thanks for any ideas. .TONY


CDRi Going into limp mode and overflowing radiator overflow and boiling

Hi All, just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar issue and what was the cause.

I have a 05 CRDi Terry have only had it about two months. General driving the temp gauge sits about 3mm off the half way mark. I went to tow our two tonne caravan over the holidays and only made it about 30km before it went into limp mode (i think thats what it is) then the temp went up to about just over 3/4. It was still running but when i pushed the accelerator it had no effect. I opened the bonnet and fount the radiaror overflow was now over flowing and boiling and steaming.  Anyway I got it towed back to the mechanics who have since replaced the radiator cap, thermostat, flushed and bleed the system and replaced the viscus fan which was faulty, however it is still doing this now even without towing a trailer or caravan, Any ideas ppl?

Is there anyone who has  done the timing belt change on an auto able to tell me how they held the crank from turning when tensioning to the required 250 -290 ft/lbs

Hi All,

Really bad day!!! :cry: :cry: :cry:

Jumped into the Terry yesterday morning to go to the shop and on the way, Terry looses all power and check engine light comes on for about 2 seconds. 2 months ago the terry started to have a strong smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin when on external air and under the hood. Took it to my local Mech who said all looked ok but keep an eye on it. So back to yesterday after the check engine light came on and went out, the car had that really strong smell of exhaust again and seemed like it was running on only 3 cylinders. Drove it straight to my Mech who connected it to the computer scanner. Came up with a P----- error code can't remember, injector 1 electronic connector. So thinking it was just a loose connector we removed the engine cover, intercooler and the plastic engine heat plate to expose the top of the rocker cover. Behold a heap of black tar type stuff all over the number 1 and 2 injectors and fuel line. He took one look and said, Hope it's still under warranty? That I replied yes it is, then take it to Mr H looks like an injector seals 1 and 2. Well I rang Mr H told them what we had discovered and they told me to have it towed over to them ASAP. But just to make matters worse, he said if it is what you say it is, we will need it for 2-3 weeks to get parts and sorry mate we can't look at it until next Tuesday. WTF :angry: :angry: :angry: so I won't know any more until then. I so hope they cover this under warranty because it won't be cheap. I will keep you all posted AS THE EVENTS UNFOLD!!!!!

EGR Blanking - Terracan CRDi

Ever since we've owned Terry she's had an habit of occasionally stalling under braking. I figured I'd try blocking off the EGR valve and see how she goes. I picked up a blanking plate off ebay in the UK for around $12 delivered.

Installation wasn't as simple as I hoped. To remove the valve you need to get enough leverage to free it from the bolts on the inlet manifold. To do this you have to follow the pipe connecting the valve back to a couple of bolts holding the support bracket on to he back of the engine. I certainly wish I had smaller hands. Also not being in possession of the greatest tool kit meant having to fiddle between two different 12mm spanner to get enough movement on the nut between the valve and the engine.

A couple of hours later I managed to get the valve off. Sure enough it was heavily caked in soot. I placed the blanking plate on to seal the exit from the valve into the manifold and replaced the valve. I retained the original gasket. So far she's driving well and no sign of sputtering under braking. No obvious signs of any power increase. Also there was no engine fault light to be seen.

Anyway I'll let you guys know if I have any problems down the line.

Hi all

I know theres been a number of posts re difficult intermittent starting etc. Well its across all hyundais and other makes aswell.

Ive had no trust on my 2006 crdi for a long time. Ive had racq call out only to have them arrive and start it first try. I took it to hyundai who put the scan tool on and said error codes for immobiliser and possibly the etac module but said we cant find a problem as it starts for us.

Way back i had crank angle sensor changed which can show similar symptoms. Basically if glow worm shows (i can start the car) if not i get the immobiliser flash 5 times and (no start). I can come back later and it might start or might not. Basically it got to a point where we couldnt go out and i booked the car in for approx 1000 bucks for 2 new keys and immobiliser  (or more if the etac was replaced awell).

Another poster mentioned spraying around the key barrel and had success? So i took of the console around the barrel and removed the small black fitting that houses the light/illuminating ring around the key barrel. On obsevation inside i could see the copper colour wire ring (presumably the antenna ring) it had two black smugges on the ring which i removed with the tip of my multimeter. 

I put it back together and bank problem solved. I am so stoked to save a 1000 bucks as i couldn't afford to get ripped of right now.

I urge anyone who is having the same issue to just check that the antenna ring is clean. All it takes is a firm pull of the panel that the key goes through and a small Phillips head for the antenna ring. 10 minute fix for what was giving my family so much grief.

Diesel drop on oil drain plug ?

Hi folks,

have been noticing the car has been a bit smelly (diesel fumes) lately and my brother noticed it yesterday too.

Looked under t he car this morning and noticed a small drop of diesel on the oil drain plug. 

Will book into the mechanic to get it looked at - is there anything Specific i should advise the mechanic of ? (he should know what he is doing?) 

I could go to a diesel specialist nearby but that may be my next step.

Any info would be appreciated.

Sump sprung a leak

Hi all.

My Terracan has sprung a leak in the oil sump on the engine. I am in the UK and cannot find a replacement. Is there any in Australia?? That I can get shipped over.. or if not can it be welded????

Hey all,

My son bought a 2004 Hyundai Terracan Highlander 4x4 wagon and noticed today that he had water overflowing from the overflow bottle.

There is no water in the oil but small bubbles in the radiator so thinking gasket leak between the exhaust and water jacket in the head gasket.

I was watching some videos of Bars Leak head gasket repair and was wondering if any of you have tried it and what did you think.

Also might need a workshop manual if that doesn't work and we have to replace the head gasket so if anyone is willing to share, that would be appreciated.

Terracan 4WD problem

Terracan 4WD hasn't worked for some time. No 4WD and no lights on the panel. Today I spent a lot of cash with a non Hyundai crew trying to find out why. The CADS actuator is functioning OK, the vacuum hoses are working and the transfer case fuse is OK. Any ideas?

Crdi , starts with a bit of aerostart

Hey guys, car won't start unless a bit of aerostart. Then runs fine. 

Replaced  cam angle sensor , no different.

when you break injector line not a real lot of fuel when cranking but heaps when running, would the car still run if it was the crank angle sensor was crook even with the spray or would it shut down. Has anyone had a look to see how much their fuel pump is putting out a injector line when cranking.

Hyundai Terra can't

My terracan starts fine first thing in the morning or when i come out to go home from work but refuses to start when hot. Spent hours sitting on the M4 after i stalled it. Waited for nrma then towtruck. Eventually  it started after sitting for about 3 1/2 hours and drove home.

Anyone have same problem or know how to fix, my mech says he has no eye deer.
