Terracan diesel hoses

I recently became the proud owner of a 2005 model which wont start. When I top up the radiator it leaks water and oil out the area at the back of the head.

As close as I can see it seems to be coming from a hose level with the block  which connects to a pipe that goes forward toward the water pump.

I can only just see this using a torch and small mirror. Short of pulling the head off any suggestions on how to replace this hose. I also suspect that the head will need to come off anyway because of the oil that is coming out with the water. I also noticed that the radiator cap did have a slight oily look on the rubber seal.

Any help is appreciated .

Has anyone imported a diesel engine from mobis in Korea. The photos in the web site show an engine that the intake manifold points straight up where the one on mine is inclined towards the passenger side at approx deg. Also they state that the engine capacity is  2896 cc where all the ones in Australia seem to be 2902 cc.

If anyone has got one ,was there any problems in fitting and did you have any issues which would make you recommend or not recommend getting one.

Thanks for any replies.

Battery Drain overnight

I have just replaced the diesel engine in my 2005 Terracan with a second hand engine. It runs fine but the battery runs flat overnight. Its draining 1.2amps but If I remove fuse number 20 this reduces to 20Ma. According to the CD disc I have on it fuse 20 supplies inlet metering valve, the ECM, the air heater relay and the EGR solenoid.

I disconnected the wiring to the inlet metering valve,  the air heater relay and the EGR solenoid all separately and the the drain is still there. If I remove the relay in the fuse box under the bonnet marked DSL ENG and C/FAN 3 the drain is no longer there. Also I can hear this relay clicking on when I connect the battery lead back to the battery.

I think his would indicate that the problem may be in the ECM. Any help as to how to rectify the problem will be greatly appreciated.

Oil Cooler Leak

We were headed for The Kimberley a couple of weeks ago, towing  2 tonne van, but had problems with overheating and 'engine malfunctions'.

The head winds going into Coober Pedy were very strong and we had to stop several times because the Terra was going into limp mode.

I had the error codes for fuel filter and the mass air flow sensor cleared after replacing the fuel filter and putting cleaner through the MAF and all appeared to well. However the Terra was using oil.

We pressed on to Tennant Creek and the overheating problem reappeared. We were towing at 90 km/hr in third gear and turning the air-con on and off depending on the engine temp which we monitored by Ultragauge. At about the same time I got a pinched nerve in my neck so we wimped out and returned to Adelaide.

Turns out the problem is due to the oil cooler leaking oil into the engine cooling system. The O-rings between the oil system and the engine cooling system have failed. The oil cooler is located between the oil filter and the engine block and so the cooler and four O-rings need replacing, plus the engine cooling system being flushed and its hoses replaced because of oil contamination.

If O-ring failure is a problem then it's probably a good idea to have them and the cooler replaced every 100-130 '000 kms.

There is a good video on YouTube which shows what's involved in fixing this problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtxOLNQot2I

It's for a Kia which shares the same engine. There's some other vids by the same author which also  prove useful.

Cheers,

Groucho

I have the engine check light come on under heavy acceleration while towing my 2 ton caravan. This seems to have no effect on the performance of the vehicle at all. I have fitted remote temp gauge, so i know engine is not over heated. Fuel consumption over last 1300 klm trip was 13.5 lts per 100 klms. Has any  body had this happen. I have had diagnostic gauge check,  no faults found.

2006 CRDI cuts out (fuel starve) between high and low idle

$

Hello, Help please.

2.9 CRDi cuts out ONLY when transitioning between high (cold) idle and low (warm) idle. This only happens if the transition occurs whilst stationary, i.e can drive thru it if not at idle at the time of transition.

It appears to be fuel starvation at this point as will not restart without a few pumps of the prime pump

Things done/checked/replaced so far;

1. filters replaced - fuel and air

2. Pressure regulating valve on engine fuel pump replaced

3. no fault codes (although tests done by 3rd party not hyundai dealer?)

3. Mass air flow meter on air inlet replaced

4. Injectors and pump tested by diesel specialists

5. no obvious fuel leaks

6. fuel economy same as prior

7. was intermittent, unpredictable gaps of up to 3 weeks , now is every time if left at idle during this transition period

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Have read quite a few other threads but none seem to match this one.

Cheers,

John T.

What damage may be caused

2.9 terracan diesel is missing and check engine light is on with the scan tool indicating that there is an open circuit on number one injector.  What damage may be caused by being driven approx 800klm  in this condition.  Periodically the engine will fire on all four cylinders for 20klm with the check engine light going off then revert back to missing again and check engine light on again. Engine doesn't appear to be overheating even in this heat we have had the last few days.

Terracan 2.9 ..2006 timing belt and kit replacement

Has any body performed replacement of the Terracan timing belt?...I'm a retired mechanic and believe I can do it myself. I have been told one needs a special tool to retain the camshafts as they move under oil pressure when the belt is removed and are difficult to realign. Is this so?

Starts everytime. But only after midday. No immobiliser dash light.

Hi lads.

I have one of the most bizarre electrical issues I have come across. I have replaced two immobiliser units, the key, the antenna, hardwired the antenna and am at my wits end.

It started back in december, when the car decided not to let me get home from work. On that day, the immobiliser light was flashing. I had a flight to australia the next day and left it with the dealership as there was no where else to take it at the time. They said the immobiliser had failed, put in a new second hand immobiliser. Then the old key wouldn't match to the new immobiliser, got a new key. This worked great until the very next day (ie. I started and drove it home), when it didn't start in the morning, cranked fine, just no starty. This time there was no immobiliser light -  none: not functioning, not non-functioning, just none. This has led to an ongoing intermittent problem. As far as I can tell, if I drive it the afternoon or evening prior, it won't start before about midday, or certainly before 7. No immobiliser light appears on the dash. Late morning/midday, immobiliser light on dash, starts first try. I haven't driven it today, so I expect it to start just fine tomorrow morning. The dealership have now said they don't know what is wrong with it, or where to go from here.

Having a car that starts after midday everyday, or early morning every second day is not particularly conducive to working a full time job. If you have any wisdom to this matter, please help.

Hi folks.

Just a question. Might make me sound stupid 😏

I was looking in my fuse box and noticed I don't have a fuse for my fuel pump, is there meant to be one in there?

I have never noticed this before today, she runs pretty good too. (intermittently turning off but think I've found that problem - crank angle sensor)

Tried to put the can in Reverse and ended up going fwd, hitting a tree and stalling. I was in 4th gear 😤

1 and 2 moved over to the 3 and 4 position.

3 and 4 moved over to the 5 and reverse position.

5 and Reverse are very hard to get to.

Popped into a nearby mechanic who said I need to replace the nylon bushing cup. Limped home in 4th...

Questions:

What is the bloody thing called? I can't find it anywhere. Part no would be great.

Any links to remove the centre console (I know how to get the stereo out)?

Thanks for any help

Terracan does not start, i need to bleed every time to start the car

Hello,
For some weeks now I have been having problems with my Terracan.
To start the engine I have to unscrew the bolt of an injector, run the engine, screw the bolt and the car starts. The more time that passes since the engine is turned off, the more time it has to turn to start. If half an hour passes, the engine will no longer start without repeating the bleeding.
I have done numerous tests and replaced something in the past few weeks. I list them below.
Replaced parts:
1) Replaced the manual priming pump.
Tests and checks carried out:
1) Check the cleanliness of the tank and its filter. Everything was clean.
2) Visual inspection of the pipes coming from the tank. No obvious loss found
3) Check the air vent of the tank. The vent works and the relative filter is clean
4) I created an artificial fuel tank with a plastic tank and connected the hose directly to the high pressure pump. The engine runs perfectly and starts even days later.

Test number 4. allows me to exclude problems with the pump and / or problems with the high pressure system.
What I don't understand is what the problem with the low pressure system could be.
There is one thing that makes me suspicious. The diesel filter has three connectors, one receives diesel from the tank, one sends diesel to the pump and one returns excess diesel to the tank. I read that inside the filter, at the diesel return connector there should be a valve that closes, preventing the pumped diesel from returning to the tank. In fact, when I use the manual priming pump it never becomes as hard as it should be because the diesel fuel returns to the tank from the return tube of the filter. Could the filter be defective? or is the problem elsewhere?
I openly accept any help.
Thanks in advance

Sick Terracan Diesel

Hi All,

Well we took Terry out to Glasshouse a couple of weekends ago, and during a recovery from a muddy bog something has happened to the engine and it has been running rough since. No water was ingested into the engine (that I could tell as I emptied out the oil filter and checked air filter and both were free of moisture/water) and the engine doesn't get any hotter than usual. The first time to start her in the morning it's terrible. No acceleration at all for the first minute or so and the revs slowly pick up, as she appears to get warm the idle smooths out and somewhat resembles an idle. As it idles it has an obvious "burble" almost "bup bup bup" sound which is most evident coming back through the snorkel. When driving she's feel sluggish off the line but will still cruise at 100 on the highway without any drama, just takes longer to get there. She's also blowing more smoke than normal.

Under the bonnet it almost sounds like an intermittent air leak. All fluids seem ok and normal. I'm thinking it could be something like a dodgy injector or an air leak around an injector seal. Another thing I have noticed is that if I check the diesel priming bulb when the cars off, it often feels soft and when I squeeze it sounds like air is in there.

Has anyone out there experienced anything similar? My list for the mechanic to check includes possible injector blow by, leak somewhere in the fuel line, blocked/dodgy injector. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Tried to change the alternator today and was defeated in the end.cry.png There is a metal pipe connected to the bottom of the vacuum pump that needs to be disconnected but seems impossible to gain access to!devil.png Had to give up in the end as weather was about to turn nasty. Has anyone else changed the alternator themselves? If so, how the **** did you gain access to this pipe? Cheers and Happy New Year from the UK!

Check Engine light when going up hills

Hello

My Terracan check engine light keeps coming on when going up a continuous hill for 3 to 5 minutes. I live in the Adelaide Hills and on the way home from Adelaide going up the  S Eastern Freeway I can't get any more than the tunnel and the check engine light will come on. Anyone that doesn't know that freeway, it is a climb. Temp stays in the middle. When the check engine light comes on I loose 25% power. I have used a Blue tooth OBDII Adaptor and app Car Scanner to get the below codes. The check engine light does out after I turn the engine off. I have tried MAF cleaner but still same problem. Any help would be have appreciated.
